The Colosseum, an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, that once held up to 80,000 spectators.
Sitting in the centre of Rome, the Colosseum is a gargantuan structure that has been standing for almost 2000 years. It was the largest amphitheatre of the time and seated up to 80,000 spectators. Today, it is the largest remaining structure from ancient Rome.
A visit to the Colosseum sheds light on what life two millennia ago was like. Inside, you can still see the tiered seating where spectators would have been placed based on class, with the best seats of course going to the Emperor and nobles and knights. In the centre of the interior, you can see the passageways that would have transported livestock and gladiators to the arena.
It has survived multiple earthquakes, looting and modern construction. With over six million visitors each year, I’m guessing the greatest threat to this colossal structure would be the erosion from 12 million pounding feet.
