This is an image that I previsualised before arriving in Tekapo, but didn't actually hold out much hope of being able to create it. I was only there for one night and the day leading up to this was quite overcast. Also, being the middle of summer, this isn't a great time of year for capturing the Milky Way in the Southern Hemisphere. In winter months, the core would be much higher, and the result would be a much denser Milky Way.In hindsight, I think this was the perfect night for this shot. Carved in between the rock formations is a small wading pool that is also a hit with the kids. I remember splashing around in that very pool when I was a child, many, many moons ago. This image was captured just behind the pool.I arrived here well before sunrise and had to navigate the rocks by torchlight. The torch was also the only way to focus my camera in such low light. The images I captured before this one were very long exposures that smoothed the ocean and started painting the sky with colour, before it was visible to the naked eye. Art, architecture, museums and cathedrals… this place has it all. At the time we had booked to be in Florence, it had even more than we expected. When we arrived, we soon realised that we had checked in at the start of a long weekend. As such, the city was crammed with tens of thousands of extra bodies, making it almost impossible to visit many of the sites, without having to wait hours in queues.We spent our first evening in Florence and then decided to get out of the city and spend a little extra time in Tuscany. The open road, small villages and smaller crowds are definitely more our scene. This cityscape was shot on the one evening we did spend in Florence.I arrived at Piazzale Michelangelo almost two hours before dusk, with the intention of spending some time wandering the surrounding parklands before setting up for the sunset shoot. With the swollen number of crowds in the city and skies set to deliver a gorgeous show of colour, it soon became obvious that if I wanted to capture the city at sunset, I would need to grab a spot soon or I would miss out. So at about ninety minutes before the light would be right for the optimal shot, I staked my claim along the crowded guardrail and waited.The masses continued to build as nightfall approached and looking back over my shoulder, the scenes were reminiscent of historical images of crowds during Beatlemania in the 60s. ___________________This afternoon, I had arranged an excursion for my students to Cabarita Beach in Northern NSW. It is generally a location full of opportunities for photographers. Beautiful white sand, rocky cliffs, amazing afternoon light and plenty of space for everyone to explore. About an hour before we were due to meet at the beach, heavy rains passed through the area, and as a result, only a couple of students showed up. Those that did attend were rewarded with very dramatic skies and gorgeous light. This image was shot as I was waiting for the students to arrive. ___________________I imagine there are very few people who have passed across Ponte dell'Accademia in Venice and not taken an image of this view. The outlook is stunning and just beckons to be captured. And I'm sure almost every shot ever taken here would be lovely. The only way for me to try to capture something unique was to wait for some sort of interaction from the boats and gondolas on the canal. Podere Belvedere is a bit of a photography hotspot and at the shoot location there were a few of us all hoping for the clouds to part. Volker, a German photographer I was chatting to, told me of a cute little tree further down the road that may be a better subject at that time. On inspecting the second location, it wasn't that much better, so I finally decided to abandon the shoot and head back to the hotel for breakfast. The temple was closed when I arrived and the view from the street wasn’t as appealing as I had hoped. Exploring the surrounds for a short while, I came across a residential complex with an external staircase. This is the view from about the 12th floor. Punakaiki is a small community on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, a little north of Greymouth.The Pancake Rocks area is a very well maintained and easily accessible park with paths that wind past blowholes and these impressive limestone formations. Apparently, the park can get quite busy, but on this particular afternoon, there were only a handful of other people there. Quiet, cool, and uncrowded. It’s a wonderful experience after having walked the same streets the previous day when they were cram-packed with visitors.Half an hour or so before sunrise, I arrived at Ponte dell'Accademia to secure a spot and set up my equipment. Not long after setting up, I was joined by a couple of traditional artists who set up easels and proceeded to paint their interpretations of the day’s beginning. It’s always nice to meet people in such situations and share stories, finding similarities in artistic pursuits. I’m used to having conversations with fellow photographers while waiting for the sun to shine on a new day, and the conversation wasn’t that different with these artists. This image was taken at Christmas while my family and I were spending a few days in Wanaka. I was keen to capture this image as the first light of the day started to glow above the horizon (as were many other photographers). I arrived at the lake about half an hour before sunrise to discover that the Wanaka Tree was covered in Christmas lights. It was quite a sight, but at the same time, quite disappointing. As attractive as the lights were, they didn’t feature in the image I had previsualised of this scene. Namba Parks is a modern shopping complex in Osaka, Japan. It is an amazing display of organic architecture that features a rooftop park scattered with large mature trees, that ascends eight levels of the complex. The view from the top-level gives visitors the feeling of standing on a natural mountaintop, right here in the middle of one of Japan’s busiest cities.
When I was taking this shot, I had my camera fixed to my tripod, pointing to the ceiling, with the LCD panel flipped down acting like a modern periscope. I walked around much of this space, shuffling left and right, rotating and twisting until I found the composition I was after. I received many confused looks from shoppers and staff as I worked my way through this shoot..
