Tokyo by Night
The view from the observation deck in Mori Tower at Roppongi Hills, Tokyo. Mori Tower is the 6th tallest building in Tokyo and has two popular locations from where to view the expansive view of the city. The observation deck on the 52nd floor, or the Rooftop Sky Deck. I was planning on shooting from the rooftop, but tripods aren’t allowed and as I wanted to shoot long exposures to capture the trailing lights from the cars below, I stayed on the observation deck.
Not long after I set up my equipment, a young photographer came and set up next to me. I'm guessing he didn’t speak English and sadly I don’t speak Japanese, so we couldn't talk to one another. He seemed to be looking for advice but as we couldn’t communicate, he simply copied everything I was doing. He would pop his head in front of mine to see what settings I was using and how I was framing the shot. It was quite amusing. I was more than happy to assist and as we were handicapped by the language barrier, this seemed to be the most effective method.
Thankfully, once the sun went down and the time came to capture the shots I had come for, he stopped interacting quite so closely and we both carried on capturing the incredible vista.
