This was my first night in Tokyo on this trip to Japan. I had been shooting around the shoreline near Odaiba Seaside Park, watching dozens of passenger boats passing by, and decided I'd like a higher vantage point to be able to capture an image such as this.

AQUA CiTY ODAIBA shopping mall was the obvious place to start looking. I scoured the many floors and viewing platforms of the centre and none were quite right. After some time, I finally found a balcony at the back of a restaurant that had just closed for the night. It had easy access and the security guard didn't seem to mind, so I set up, ready to capture the passing boats. And then... nothing. I must have waited at least an hour before another boat crossed my frame. I had just about given up on the shot that I wanted and settled for a regular cityscape when this boat came into frame. This image is a composite of three 2-minute exposures.
